Tips for an Effective Work From Home Office

It is a lot easier today to have a productive home office for your home based business because of the advancement of technology in telecommunications and computers. In addition, this equipment has become more affordable and user friendly.

There are also many other things to consider when setting up you home office, from office space to supplies. Taking the time to organize your work area prior to getting started will save you time and money as you will be able to function much more effectively.

Keep in mind because this is your home based business most of these business related items are tax deductable.

Here are some simple steps to walk you through getting your work area set up.

Step 1 Define Your Workspace.

Having a separate room for you home office is ideal, but not necessary. The key is to find a space that can be dedicated as your home office area. You will be much more efficient if you dont have to move household items or papers around every time you sit down to start work.

Step 2 Office Furniture for your home office

You will need the basics which include a desk, chair and lamp. If you dont have any furniture you could consider buying a used desk or chair, there are plenty of used furniture stores or look on line. You could even build a desk by placing 2 file cabinets on each side of a space then put a board across them. An adjustable chair - where you can adjust its height, the tilt of the seat, and the lumbar support - is a good investment. You'll be surprised how much less tired you will feel at the end of the day with a chair that has good back support.

Step 3 Office Supplies and Storage

You need to invest in some standard office supplies that stay in your workspace, as you should not be spending your time looking all through the house when you need a stapler or scissors. You will also need items that can help you keep organized. A home office seems to produce more paper than anything else, file cabinets or supply cupboards will help you remain uncluttered and organized. To further organize use 3 ring binders, spiral notebooks, caddys and trays. You can stack binders and label them for easy reference. Spiral notebooks are great as you can use different ones for different topics, they are easy to refer back to and they are handy if you need to take them with you. Last but not least, dont forget to get a good office calendar.

Step 4 Phone, fax and internet service for your Home Based Business

If you make a lot of business calls you would benefit from getting a second phone line into your house that is dedicated for business use. This will also give you the opportunity to record a professional greeting on your business line. If you make a lot of calls out of your local area you should look into flat rate plans which have become very popular and reasonably priced. For as little as $25.00 per month you can get unlimited long distance, and an entire package of other features including but not limited to 3 way calling, caller ID, and voice mail. You can use your 2nd phone line for fax services or subscribe to an online fax service like efax.

With the many new developments in technology to effectively navigate the internet and individual websites as well, you should consider getting broadband or cable internet service. Dial up service is very slow and makes it almost impossible to view many websites or even emails due to the expanding use of graphics and streaming media (videos). Streaming media is now used in email videos, web casts, broadcasts and IM (instant messaging). We subscribe to a service that offers us cutting edge technology to help us effectively communicate our messages through video, thereby enhancing our business.

Step 5 Computers, printers, and scanners for your Home Based business

This is the communication age which has resulted in a massive amount of information being sent and received at high speeds. In my opinion to operate a business it is a necessity to have a computer. To communicate you need email, for marketing or research you need the internet. Even to do a financial spreadsheet or write a document you need a computer. If you travel, owning a laptop makes it convenient and they have come down tremendously in price. Also, depending on your needs now you can get an all in 1 printer that, prints, copies, scans and faxes.

With advances in technology there is no reason your home office cant offer you every thing you need to operate an efficient and profitable home based business.
